League Rules:

League Info:

  • The VBA is a salary based fantasy league
  • Each game runs weekly, monday through sunday
  • Rosters are set weekly. Latest Sunday evening, for the following Monday
  • It is a 5cat league. Points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
  • Rosters are made up of 15 players. PG (2) SG (2) G (1) SF (2) PF (2) F (1) C (2) IL (3)
  • Trades are subject to the NBA's 125% + 100k rules for teams over the salary cap.
  • The soft cap is set usually a few years in advance, and subject to change.
  • The hard cap is set October 15th. The formula is (Largest payroll in NBA * # of NBA teams / # of VBA teams) Teams are not allowed over this figure.

Protecting players:

  • Every year in May we either do a redistribution draft or an expansion draft.
  • If we add new owners (2) we do an expansion draft. Both new teams would get 7 selections.
  • In a redistribution draft, each team gets one pick based on regular season record.
  • Both drafts, the time limit is 24 hours per pick
  • The pool of players in each draft is made up of unprotected players from each team in the league.
  • Each team can protect up to 6 players. Those 6 players salaries must have a combined amount smaller than that teams current soft cap
  • Once a player loses 2 of their unprotected players, the rest of their roster becomes protected.
  • Trades are allowed at the start of the draft, through the draft, and 12 hours past the last selection is made.
  • You cannot trade the unselected pick, but you can trade the player selected with the pick.
  • For every player lost in this draft, the team will receive a TPE the size of the players salary. The TPE is treated like a player in trades, and subject to the same trade restrictions. You cannot combine TPE's or use more than one in a  trade. The TPE expires at the end of the season. You can renounce the TPE and the amount is taken off your books.
  • If you acquire a TPE in a trade, and renounce it, its is treated as a waived player. 40% comes off the books immediately, 60% remains. In the case of the TPE, the 60% is removed after 30 days.
  • If there is an expansion draft. Expansion teams get a soft cap 2/3 the amount of the rest of the league, and they must select 2/3 of that soft cap with their 7 selections.

Lottery/College Draft:

  • The VBA lottery will take place the same time as the NBA lottery. Each of the NBA teams lotto balls are assigned to VBA teams by record.
  • You cannot trade a draft pick more than 5 years away, and you must own a 1st round pick every other year.
  • The league will not recognize or enforce protections on picks.
  • The college draft starts on June 22nd, trades are allowed starting June 18th.
  • In the case of the NBA draft not yet being started, picks have 12 hours to be made. If a deadline is missed, their clock starts over with 3 less hours and they can be skipped by the next team on every missed clock. In the case of the NBA draft having started the picks have 8 hours to be made and they can be skipped until they make their selection.
  • When a player is drafted their rights go on your team page (trade value $0) and 12 hours after the draft they are all assigned a salary.

Draft Rights

  • Each team owns 2 Draft Rights slots
  • They do not take up one of the roster spots.
  • A player in a draft rights spot takes up capspace (salary based on their draft selection) but have zero dollar value when it comes to trades, and cannot be selected in the expansion/redistribution draft.
  • To put a player in a DR spot, PM the commish with a link showing that the player has signed with a Non NBA team.
  • If a player on a DR slot is cut/rescinded, they go into the FA pool and cannot be put back on any teams DR slot.
  • When a player on a DR slot is signed by an NBA team, the VBA team must waive/rescind or they will be saddled with their NBA contract

Free Agency

  • Free Agency starts July 6th.
  • It is done auction style. The highest bidder wins the player. That high bid represents their 1st year of salary. The following years, or lack thereof, are based on their NBA contract
  • In case of a tie. A tie can only happen of both teams are using their MAX BID. If it is a tie, the player will be awarded to the team with the least amount of players who play the same position according to Yahoo. If it is still a tie, the person who bid first wins.
  • Free Agency exceptions. Each team is given a FA exception. They are given at the end of each season, and based on the teams payroll at that time. For all teams over the soft cap at that time, they are given a MLE. The MLE is worth approximately 7.5% of the projected soft cap. Teams under the soft cap are given the SSE, worth approximately 8% of the projected soft cap.
  • The MLE and SSE cannot be combined with capspace or used in trades. They expire at the start of the regular season. If you are under the soft cap, you cannot use the MLE or SSE until your capspace is smaller than the size of the exception.
  • KG exception: Every team can use the KG exception to retain players in free agency. When trying to retain a player whose FA rights you own, you can bid up to 130% of your MAX bid
  • A minimum bid, and minumum increase is 250,00 if you have money (capspace or exception). If you have no money it is "0"; which can be outbid by anything.
  • EVERY bid has an outbid period of 24 hours during offseason and 12 hours during season. The exception to this, is during the summer auctions, if every player with more $ than the current bid, states that they are out (helps move things along); this can make an auction immediately stop
  • The outbid period requires someone who can actually outbid you; thus calling it an outbid period. If you bid a higher amount than anyone has, the auction is over.
  • An auction will end once the time limit is up, the high bid is higher than anyone elses current high bid (regardless if they are trying to free up more capspace at the time), or everyone but the high bidder has dropped out of the bidding.

Misc.

  • If a player retires in NBA, the VBA owner can waive that player under a retirement clause and have full cap relief in 365 days from when waived.
  • Trade deadline. Players who are in the final year of their contracts and will become free agents that summer, can not be traded during the season after March 1st. All other players cannot be traded after March 15th. No players can be signed in free agency after March 22nd.
  • Each player's salary will be, as close as we can, their actual NBA salary for the current season, with the following exception:

If the player's salary for the current season has not yet been updated by the NBA, then his salary will be figured based upon the reported contract signed in association with the guidelines set forth under the terms of the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement. (Commissioner has final say on this assumption)

  • Rookie contracts: VBA owners have the option to opt out of paying a rookie contracts 3rd and 4th seasons. The player must be waived by 10/25 of the season prior for the salary to be taken off of their cap. An owner must post that they want to waive that player by that date or the following seasons salary becomes guaranteed

  • Player/Team Options: Both are determined by the commissioner on 3/25 to accommodate the differences in our free agency period. All available information is taken into account when making the decisions. All options are distinguished on team pages by the salary being in bold.

  • Extensions: If a player has their contract extended in the NBA, their contract automatically becomes extended in the VBA. If a player opts out in NBA to sign a new contract with their former team, that is not an extension. If a player is extended following the VBA trade deadline; the VBA owner has the option to decide if they want the extension or not.

  • Once a player is waivedin the VBA, 60% of their salary stays on that teams books. Any player/team options become guaranteed when you waive them and you do pay 60% of that amount. If that player is later signed by another team; the amount that they are signed for comes off of the old teams books, with 10% raises coming off the books for following years. If you sign a player who has been cut by you in the past, it does not minimize the amount you owe them for the prior cut.

  • A player who makes more than 1 million can be traded (with no other players) without following the 125%+1k rule

  • For a trade to be accepted; the trade must be posted in the transaction thread and both teams must accept terms.
